Help for families and young people during the EHC plan process

The Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan request and needs assessment can be daunting and complex. Some families and young people find they need support with the process.

There are a number of organisations that can give you guidance and advice, as well as practical support, for example, help to fill in forms.

Some of the services which offer support include the following.

  • SEND Advice Surrey offers impartial, confidential, free advice and support throughout the EHC assessment and planning process. This service is partially funded by Surrey County Council but operates at 'arms length' to the Local Authority.
  • ACE (Advisory Centre for Education) offer independent, practical advice and information on state education in England.
  • Council for Disabled Children have an EHCP advice section on their website, which includes resources including good practice examples.
  • IPSEA (Independent Providers of Special Education Advice) offer an information service that provides information on the law relating to special educational needs and disability. They run an advice line and a Tribunal Helpline, which gives free and independent, legally based SEN advice.
  • The charity Contact offer a free helpline with education specialist advisors who can advise you on any aspect of your child's education.

Your SEND Caseworker can also provide information on the EHC process.
